Monaghan Motor Club held their annual awards night on Sunday last in the Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan.

Monaghan Motor Club Chairperson Conor Maguire started the night off with a talk congratulating all Monaghan Motor Club Members for their various success stories both at home and abroad.

Ballinode man Conor Mohan navigated for Donegal man Eamonn Kelly in the Junior World Rally Championship.

Gretchen Swinburne navigated Patricia Denning to 2^nd in class in Rally Jameel in Saudi Arabia.

Derek Mackarel won the Sligo Pallets Irish Forestry Rally Championship and the McGrady Insurance Motorsport UK, Northern Ireland Forest Rally Challenge title.

Shane and Ciaran Maguire won the National Endurance Trial Championship.

Gregory Shinnors and Andrew Mackarel were also crowned the 2023/24 National Navigation Trial Champions.

 Shane and Ciaran Maguire also became the National Endurance Trial champions on Sunday as the pair finished 1st OA on the Birr Endurance Trial,

The perpetual cups for the Ronnie Hawe Monaghan Stages Rally were presented. Sam Moffett and James O’Reilly won the Maguire International Cup for being the highest placed club member crew on the day. The pair finished 2^nd overall behind Josh Moffett/Keith Moriarty. The Keenan Stainless Steel Cup was presented to David Moffett and Martin Connolly for being the highest placed club finishers in class 14. The Squealing Pig Cup went to Seamus Connolly and Gary McCrudden for being the highest placed club members in the 2-litre class. Anthony Hand and David McCrudden were presented with the JG Kelly Supplies Cup for being the top club finishers in the 1.6 litre class.

The lady’s award was presented to Molly Maguire for being the highest placed lady in the club Traders Championship.

Aaron McGorman was awarded the Novice Navigator Perpetual Cup for being the winning Novice navigator in the Gary Nesbitt Club Navigation Championship.

Peter Cassidy was awarded the 2024 Gerry McNamara award for services to Co. Monaghan Motor Club. A regular face at club events for decades, Peter is always on hand to capture the action and promote the activities of the club. Well done Peter. Thanks for all your contributions and we look forward to being caught on camera at the Drumlin Navigation Trial in a few weeks.

In the Gary Nesbitt Club Navigation Championship, Conor Boylan and Derek Mackarel were overall winners. 1st in Beginner class went to Eoghán and Shane Farrell. 2^nd in the class went to Ben Mohan and Sean McCaffrey. 3^rd in class went to Caolain McCaffrey and Pauric Duffy. 1st Novice went to Aaron and Ciaran McGorman. 2^nd went to Gretchen and Martin Swinburne. 3^rd in the class went to Molly and Shane Maguire. Aaron McElroy and Declan Tynan finished 1st in the Semi-Expert class, with Ciaran Maguire/Eoghan Corr finishing 2^nd and Peter Farrell/Damien Hagan finished 3^rd. David McCrudden/Martin Tynan finished 1st in the Expert class with Gregory Shinnors/Andrew Mackarel finishing 2^nd and Evin Hughes/Pakie Duffy finished 3^rd.  

Finally at the end of the night it was the big one, the club Traders Trophy. This highly sought after cup is awarded to the competitor who has the highest score in all club events across all disciplines.

The 2024 Traders Championship Cup was once again won by Tydavnet man David McCrudden.

Langan wins in Glenswilly

Adam Langan took the overall victory on last Saturdays, Donegal Navigation Trial hosted by Donegal Motor Club. James Logue and Keith Sheridan organised a 75-mile event based out of Glenswilly GAA Centre. Adam and his driver Patrick McDonnell completed the event acquiring 12 marks, five marks the better of 2^nd placed Eamon Doherty/Darragh Kelly and six marks ahead of 3^rd placed Anthony McDonald/Sean McConnell. Langan picked up 2 marks for being two minutes late arriving to Tp4, Tp18 and Tp19. They also picked up 6 marks for being six minutes late to Tp20. Oisín Sherlock/Eoghan Corr finished 3^rd in the Expert Class. Darren Lavery/Aaron McGorman retired from the event with mechanical trouble on the approach to Tp7.

Regulations and entry are now available for our Drumlin Navigation Trial.  Derek Mackarel and Conor Boylan have organised a 120-mile event based out of the Acorn Centre in Newbliss, on Saturday night the 9^th November. The event will be round 2 of the National Navigation Trial Championship and the opening round of the 2024/25 Squealing Pig Monaghan Border Navigation Trial Championship and the Monaghan Motor Club Navigation and Overall Championships.

In the land down under Macartan Kierans navigated Darren Sweeney to 1^st overall on Bulahdelah Rally last weekend in WRX Subaru Impreza.

The County Monaghan Motor Club annual awards night takes place this Sunday night at 8pm in the Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan Town. Tickets are €25. David McCrudden/Martin Tynan were 1^st in the Expert class with Gregory Shinnors/Andrew Mackarel 2^nd and Evin Hughes/Pakie Duffy finished 3^rd.

Aaron McElroy/Declan Tynan finished 1^st in the Semi-Expert Class while Ciaran Maguire/Eoghan Corr finished 2nd and Peter Farrell/Damien Hagan finished 3^rd.

Aaron McGorman/Ciaran McGorman were 1^st in the Novice class with Gretchen Swinburne/Martin Swinburne finishing 2^nd and Molly Maguire/Shane Maguire finished 3^rd. Eoghán Farrell/Shane Farrell finished 1^st in the Beginner class, with Ben Mohan/Sean McCaffrey finishing 2^nd and Caolain McCaffrey/Pauric Duffy finished 3^rd in the class.

David McCrudden won the prestigious club Traders Championship again and Molly Maguire won the Ladies award for being the top scoring lady in the Traders Championship.

Donegal Motor Club are organising a Navigation Trial

This Saturday night, based out of Glenswilly GAA Centre. James Logue and Keith Sheridan have organised a 75-mile event. Sign on is at 17:30 with first competing crew away at 21:01.

Josh Moffett was crowned the Triton Showers National Rally Champion driver for the fourth consecutive time on Sunday.

Other drivers including Co. Monaghan’s Niall Maguire have won the National title numerous times, but nobody has ever won it four times and especially four consecutive times.

Josh’s victory also gets his navigator Keith Moriarty the navigators title for the 3^rd consecutive time. This fourth National Championship win in a row means he’s effectively parked himself on the top step on the podium.

Gary McPhillips/Paul Sheridan finished 15th OA and 2nd in class 14. Richard Moffett finished 19th OA and 5th in class 14. Sam Moffett/James O’Reilly had been battling brother Josh for the National Championship title until SS8 when he picked up a puncture, and dropped from 2^nd to 25^th OA. On the final stage he gained two places to finish 23rd OA. Johno Doogan finished 24th OA and 8th in class 14. Killian McArdle navigated Craig Rahill to 26th OA and 1st in class 2. Michael Carbin had a difficult day in his Escort MKII as he is still relatively new to rear wheel drive and especially rallying heavy rain. He had chosen the wrong tyre choice for the opening loop of stages. At first service after SS3 he selected a better tyre choice and his stage times immediately improved. Paul Kelly/Darragh Kelly we battling for a top 10 finish until SS7 when they picked up a puncture. They finished 36^th OA.

Anthony Hand/David McCrudden finished 38th OA and 1st in class 11R. Michael Conlon/James McEnaney finished 40th OA and 1st in class 12. Paul McPhillips navigated Ryan McArdle to 51st OA and 2nd in class 12. Cathal Sheridan/Cole Leonard took 1st in class 10. Martin McPhillips finished 5th in class 11R. Damien Connolly navigated Oran England to 3rd in class 2.

David Moffett/Martin Connolly retired on the very last stage. Brian Cumiskey retired after SS6.  James McCarville/Conal McNulty retired on SS8. Eamonn Kelly/Conor Mohan retired in service after SS3 due to differential issues in their Escort.

Treanor Victorious in Cork.

Ryan Treanor and his Co. Longford driver Shane Dalton won the Cork Startrek Navigation Trial on Saturday night last. The event was the opening round of the 2024/25 Motorsport Ireland, National Navigation Trial Championship. The opening round was based out of Whitechurch Community Hall, North of Cork City.

Aaron O’Regan assisted by Patrick O’Sullivan and Nial Murphy organised an 80 mile event, taking in farm lanes and forestry tracks between Whitechurch and Killavullen. The first supplementary route instruction was received at TP2 for the location of Tp3. The trick here was that the approach and departure were not on the route instruction as it was included on the main route instructions hours earlier in the Community Hall. Tp3 was located on a farm lane in the townland of Island. From here, it was two more long Farm lanes, one of which included a river ford for Tp’s 4 and 5. After Tp6 it was into a farm in Ballyvorisheen West for all of Vias 7,8,9 and Tp10. As tough as this sounds with four checkpoints taking place within a few hundred yards, all crews were given a clear diagram of the route before the event began. Control 11 and Tp12 and Tp13 were all on public roads before in was back to forestry lanes in Knockacullata for the way to Tp14 and Tp15. The first relaxed section of the night took place between Tp16 and Tp17. The Departure of Tp17 brought competitors into Nagles Mountains for Timepoints 18 through 25. Oisín Sherlock was navigating for local man Jack Long. Their event came to a premature end here as they would slide off the muddy lane after leaving Tp18. Although a recovery jeep tried to pull them back onto the lane, the track was too narrow and overgrown to allow the correct angle to tow from. They did get out with the help of five people pulling the car up with ropes almost three hours later, but by that time the event was well over. The Speed Regulation Section took place between Tp27 and Tp29. During this section competitors must do a set average speed, with penalties being received for every 10s too fast or slow. The average speed in this case was exactly 50kph. At the end of this section (Tp29) another route instruction was received for the route to and including the location of Tp30. This route instruction was in the form of a herringbone tulip diagram with intermediate distances from each junction, with a note to ignore all closed gates and taped off openings.  Tp30 was back in Nagles Mountain as was Tp31, Via32 and Tp33. The event then moved back toward the farm where Tp3 had been located as the final supplementary route instruction was gave out there for the departure of Tp38 and the location of and approach/departures of Via39, Via40, Tp41 and Tp42. As with the Via’s and Tp10 earlier, Tp38, V39, V40, Tp41 and Tp42 were all located in the one farm so a diagram of the farm was received as the supplementary instruction had to be followed correctly. From Tp42 it was a short trip over the road to the penultimate Control before heading to the Final Control back in the Community Hall. When results were totted up, it was an outright win for Ryan Treanor/Shane Dalton who were down six marks for lateness. They were two marks the better of 2^nd placed Patrick Corcoran/Patsy McDonagh. Greg Shinnors/Andy Mackarel finished 3^rd overall on 10 marks. Shane Maguire navigated Owen Murphy to 6^th OA. Evin Hughes/Pakie Duffy finished 7^th OA. Gretchen and Martin Swinburne finished 8^th OA and 1^st in the Semi-Expert Class. Oisín Sherlock failed to finish the event.

Christopher McMahon and Damien Treanor secured the overall victory on last Saturday nights Navigation Trial, based out of Aughnamullen GAA. The event was the final round of the 2023/24 club Navigation Championship and the overall club Traders Championship. Christopher and Damien were the only crew to complete the 85 mile event without dropping a single penalty. The trial began at 10pm due to a number of crews also doing the Clare forestry rally earlier in the day. The first five timepoints all took place between Shantonagh and Corduff with both timepoints 4 and 5 requiring the use of farm lanes in Bocks Lower and Bocks Middle. The event then crossed the R180 towards Lisdoonan, Broomfield and the south side of the R181 for Timepoints 6 to 17 including Via 1, Via 2 and Control B.  Farm lanes in Drumlurg, Annahaia, Rathmore and Lisnamuck were used for the location of Tp’s 6 and 7, Via 1 and Tp10. A farm yard in Drumherriff North, the location of TP11 was where the first supplementary route instruction was handed out for the location of Tp’s 12 and 13. The supplementary route instruction was in the form of a straight line herringbone tulip diagram, which brought crews through farm and private lanes in Lackafin and Kednagullion. The next supplementary route instruction was received at TP16. This route instruction was in the form of a route card containing the locations of all previous check point locations, including the unknown TP17. The trick here was that the approach and departure were swapped around, quarter way down the page. Any crew failing to spot this would be met with a wrong approach and possibly a departure at TP17. Eighteen out of the thirty four starters failed to find TP17 or were met with a wrong approach penalty.

From here the event crossed the R181 for the second half of the event, with the remaining checkpoints located between Lough Egish, the R183 at Ballybay, Creeve, Latton and Shantonagh.

Tp18 was located on a farm lane in Tossy before heading to TP19 in Drumhawn where a further supplementary route instruction was received for to find the location of TP 20. A box tulip with cumulative distance brought crews to the location of TP20 via farm lanes in the townland of Tonyglassan. The Intermediate time check section took place between Tp23 in Agheralane and Tp24 in Lackan. At Tp24, the final supplementary route instruction was handed out for to reveal the direction of travel and location on TP’s 25 and 26. Competitors had to be very accurate on their Tripmeter here as they were passing very close by TP26 on their way to TP25. The slightest error would end up with arriving at TP26 first and having to skip TP25 and go directly to TP27. TP27 was located at Crossduff Lough. This was the final Time point of the night as next up was the penultimate Control (CC) in Drumillard which was accessed via a long farm lane through Knocktornagh and Aghmakerr. At Control C it was just a short trip back up the road to the final Control, back in Aughnamullen GAA.

When the results were totted up Christopher and Damien were the only crew who did the entire event faultlessly. So achieved a rare zero penalty victory.  It was a very close event as one crew finished on 1 penalty, three on 2 and two on 4 penalties.

In the classes, Eoghan Farrell/Mickey McNelis finished 1^st in the Beginner class, with Ben Mohan/Damien Hagan finishing 2^nd and Caolain McCaffrey/Sean McCaffrey finishing 3^rd. In the Novice class it was Molly Maguire/Ciaran Duffy 1^st, Aaron and Ciaran McGorman 2^nd and Gareth Kelly/Shane Laverty 3^rd. In the Semi-Expert class it was, Patrick Corcoran/Mickey Conlon who finished 1^st, Danny McKenna/Francie McElvaney finished 2^nd and Anthony McDonald/Sean McConnell finished 3^rd.

The Expert class was a tight affair as no tiebreaker could separate who finished 2^nd, as both Conor Mohan/Michael Carbin and Conor Boylan/Derek Mackarel were down 2 penalties picked up at the exact same place and both cars had the same engine CC’s. Evin Hughes/Pakie Duffy finished 1^st in class, down just one penalty for being one minute late to TP12. David McCrudden/Martin Tynan would have possibly been on for a clean sheet also, but their car developed a mechanical issue on the way to Tp11, this issue caused them to pick up two penalties for late arrival. As their penalties were picked up at TP11 rather than at TP12 as had happened both Conor Mohan/Michael Carbin and Conor Boylan/Derek Mackarel they lost out on 2^nd in class because of the furthest cleanest tiebreak rule. On a positive note for David, he finished 5^th OA which was enough to finish 1^st OA in the prestigious club Traders Championship for the second year in a row. Derek and Conor became the 2024 Gary Nesbitt club Navigation Trial champions by 2.3 points over Tynan/McCrudden, showing just how competitive the championship is.

After the event the winning crew thanked the Marshalls, residents and land owners for all their help and support. Peter Farrell and Conor Maguire who organised the event also thanked all the land owners and residents for their support.

The opening round of the Motorsport Ireland National Navigation Trial Championship begins this weekend with the Cork Motor Club Startrek Navigation Trial. Regulations and Entries are available now.

The final round of the Sligo Pallets Irish Forestry Rally Championship took place on Saturday last.

Having won the drivers title on the previous round Derek Mackarel needed to take a top six finish to secure the navigators title for his codriver Eamonn Creedon. The six stage event took place in the forests on the Galway and Clare border. Derek finished his rays rallying in 3^rd overall, just 10.1s down on 1^st and 4.3s off 2^nd overall. Once his event was complete, it was into the car and back to Monaghan for to do the Navigation Trial. Another man doing the forest rally and the Navigation Trial was Michael Conlon. Himself and James McEnaney suffered numerous punctures throughout the day but still went home in 13^th overall and 1^st in class 14.  Killian McArdle navigated Joseph Kelly to 14^th OA and 4^th in class 2. Steven Corey finished 21^st OA and 2^nd in class 14.

Monaghan Motor Club’s annual awards night takes place on Sunday night the 27^th of October in the Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan.

Paul Barrett and Conor Mohan were the top Monaghan Motor Club Finishers at last weekends Munster Car Club Cork 20 International Rally.

The pair finished the shortened five stage event in 18^th overall (OA). The event had to be cancelled after just five stage due to the treacherous weather conditions. Paul Kelly guided Co. Limerick man, Paul Purtill to 19^th OA and 1^st in class 13. Domhnall Lennon navigating for Cian Caldwell finished 23^rd OA. Killian McArdle guided Matthew Boyle to 28^th OA. Damien Connolly navigated Oran England to 31^st OA.  Arthur Kierans was navigating for Johnny O’Sullivan, they retired after Special Stage 3.

Greg Shinnors was the only club member taking part in Mayo and District Motorsport Club’s Loose Surface Autocross on Sunday. He finished his event in 9^th OA.

Navigation season begins this Saturday night with our own October Navigation Trial.

The event is also the final round of the club Navigation and Traders Championship. Clerk of the Course Peter Farrell and Conor Maguire have organised an 85 mile event, based out of Aughnamullen GAA in Lough Egish.
