  • Duffy & Hughes Win in Longford

Ballybay’s Evin Hughes guided local man Pakie Duffy to overall victory on last weekend’s Midland Navigation Trial. The event was a counting round of the National & Border Navigation Championships. COC Robert Howard organised a 70 mile route through some classic navigation country based out of the town of Drumlish. Duffy/Hughes took a clear win with championship rivals Derek Mackarel/Muireann Hayes in 2nd and Richard Cassidy/Paul Phelan taking 3rd.

There was drama even before the event began as Richard Cassidy’s Vectra broke a diff coming off the trailer, seemingly ending their event before it even began. A frantic call to the Mackarel family followed and a car was located but it was back in Stonebridge! Richard & Janice Mackarel met in Cavan and switched cars. Richard made it back just in time for the start.

After a fairly straight-forward start, the event tightened up considerably between TP7 to TP11 which included two Plot & Bash timepoints. Pakie Duffy/Evin Hughes and Shane Dalton/Nigel McCloughrey were both on clean sheets with Dermot Whelton/Mark McCarthy & Michael Tynan/Ciaran Tynan both just one penalty adrift. A jumbled tulip diagram used for TP13 caught out some crews, but everyone found the ‘snake herringbone’ tulip for TP16 and TP17 difficult to decipher.

Duffy/Hughes pulled clear on this section dropping just 1 penalty into TP18. Derek Mackarel/Muireann Hayes were the only other crew to correctly complete this section dropping 11 penalties. Richard Cassidy/Paul Phelan, showing no ill effects from their late car change, also successfully negotiated the tulip but went over maximum lateness at TP18. Despite this, they claimed 3rd overall.

A long Speed Regulation Section brought crews back to Drumlish with no other changes to the leaderboard. So it was Duffy/Hughes who picked up their first win of the season with Mackarel/Hayes in 2nd to maintain their lead in the National & Border Championships. Cassidy/Phelan completed the podium in 3rd place with Dalton/McCloughrey and Tynan/Tynan 4th and 5th respectively.

Mac Kierans/Conor Boylan (55 pens) won the Semi-Expert class from Jack McKenna/Andrew Wedlock (100 pens) and Peter Farrell/Shane Farrell (125 pens). Local men Darren Quinn/Seamus McTigue (53 pens) won the Novice class from Michael Carbin/Conor Mohan (63 pens) & Kevin McCormick/David McCrudden (74 pens). In the Beginner’s class, Paddy Callaghan/Sean Cahill Jnr (129 pens) won from Ballybay men Aaron Dixon/Dylan Lennon (133 pens) with Mark McDermott/Patrick Brides (154 pens) third.

Dessie Keenan & James McCarville were in action at last weekend’s Killarney Historic Stages Rally. The pair finished 7th overall in the Modified Section of the event and 2nd in class. Ballinode’s Vincent & JP McAree came home 32nd overall and 10th in class. Vincent’s father, Brendan & John Henderson retired their Porsche on stage six. Raymond Conlon/James O’Reilly retired their Corolla on the opening stage.

The premier award on the night, the Traders Trophy, was presented to Clones driver Martin Tynan as overall Club Champion. This is Martin’s first Traders victory and it came after many years of trying. Even this year the win looked unlikely, until the results of the October Navigation Trial changed the points table completely. In the end, Martin proved to be a worthy and popular champion.

There was a special presentation to Cora Maguire to mark her retirement form the club committee after 18 years. During that time, Cora had served both as Club Secretary and Event Secretary. Her contribution to the club has been phenomenal and she is wished every happiness for the future.

    Carbery Navigation Trial

A number of Monaghan crews made the trip to Leap, West Cork for the second round of the Munster Night Navigation Championship. The 80 mile event proved to be a very challenging event with multiple sections on unmapped roads and 60 timepoints. Pakie Duffy/Evin Hughes finished up 4th overall after a trying event, with Derek Mackarel and Muireann Hayes in 5th. Emmet McCooey/Christopher McMahon put in a brilliant performance to take 7th overall and 1st in the Beginner’s class by a massive margin. Caolan & Ryan Treanor finished 3rd in the same class. Mac Kieans/Conor Boylan survived a broken ball-joint to take 3rd in the Semi-Expert class.

    National Championship Prizegiving

Monaghan Motor Club members were well represented at last weekend’s Triton Showers National Stages Championship Prizegiving. Niall Maguire & Enda Sherry received their awards for 3rd overall in the 2016 Championship. The pair had another strong consistent championship campaign with multiple podium finishes through the year.

Peader Hurson/Damien Connolly were the class 7 champions. The pair had a mixed season which restricted their bid for overall honours. Shane Maguire/Mac Kierans were the Class 4 Champions. They narrowly missed out on the overall Group N title after a year-long battle with Aiden Wray/Kieran McGrath. Seamus Connolly/Gary McCrudden dominated Class 11R all year to easily add the class to their overall Border success.

    Road Safety Presentation

Club Members Shane Maguire and Stephen Wright, on behalf of Monaghan Motor Club, recently made a presentation to Transition Year students on the importance of “Keeping The Race In It’s Place”

The pair were involved as part of a wider presentation organised by An Garda Síochána in the Garage Theatre in Monaghan on Road Safety Awareness.

The two rally stars also explained the safety features of a rally car and the equipment they use as competitors in the interest of safety.

  • Mackarel & Hayes Take Drumlin Spoils

Derek Mackarel & Muireann Hayes secured overall victory on last weekend’s Drumlin Navigation Trial, which counted as the second round in the National Navigation Championship.

The event is regarded as the pinnacle event in the Navigation Trial calendar and attracted a strong entry of 38 crews.

COC Martin Connolly laid out a tricky 100 mile route in North-East Monaghan. It was the Monaghan/Cork team of Mackarel & Hayes who put it a faultless run to secure overall honours by a five penalty margin. Derek also clinched the Gary Nesbitt Club Navigation Championship. Martin Tynan & Fintan Clerkin secured 2nd overall.

This result gave Martin his first Trader’s Trophy success after coming close over the last number of years while Fintan was the winning navigator in the Gary Nesbitt Championship. Reigning Trader’s champion, Damien Connolly guided Damien Hagan to 3rd overall.

Conditions were clear and dry as crews left Tyholland Community Centre and on to the opening section in the Castleshane & Glaslough areas. The first Speed Regulation Section caught out a few crews including Trader’s contenders, Damien Hagan/Damien Connolly & Michael Tynan/Ciaran Tynan who dropped 5 and 3 penalties respectively. TP10 was a plot & bash timepoint with the approach and departure reversed. Top seeds, Dermot Whelton/Mark McCarthy dropped 3 penalties whilst a number of other crews in the Semi-Expert, Novice & Beginner class were also caught out. TP40 was also given at this point on the back of the sheet with some crews failing to notice which gave rise to problems later in the night. TP15 and TP16 involved the use of straight-line and ball & arrow tulips. This was a true test of the navigator and with roads being looped multiple times it was easy to take the wrong route.

After this section just three crews were still on clean sheets.

These were Derek Mackarel/Muireann Hayes, Pakie Duffy/Evin Hughes and Ashley McAdoo/Laurence Keenan.  There was no change amongst the leaders before the petrol halt on the outskirts of Monaghan town. Peter Farrell/Shane Farrell were going well to lead the Semi-Expert class on 7 penalties. Kevin McCormick/David McCrudden (17 penalties) led the Novice class with Paddy Sherlock/Pamela McMahon (25 penalties) held a six penalty advantage in the Beginner’s class.

This showed that the Novice and Beginner crews were able to make the timepoints given the mostly tarmac roads & straight forward navigation sections used.

The crews advanced to the second half which moved towards Tydavnet and Emyvale before coming back through Glaslough and returning to Tyholland shortly before 2am.

The three-way tie for the lead became a two-way tie when McAdoo/Keenan dropped 1 penalty at TP25, Connolly’s yard. A number of crews were surprisingly caught out on the second Speed Regulation Secttion. TP37, another plot & bash timepoint decided the event. Mackarel/Hayes dropped 1 penalty but Duffy/Hughes fared worse with a wrong approach dropping them out of contention. TP40 which had been given earlier caught out a number of crews. McAdoo/Keenan were the main victims as a wrong approach here cost them 2nd overall.

This left Mackarel/Hayes clear winners on just 1 penalty. Martin Tynan/Fintan Clerkin took 2nd overall on five penalties with Damien Hagan/Damien Connolly 3rd overall on six penalties. This secured the Trader’s Championship for Martin after many years of trying.

Duffy/Hughes were a disappointed 4th with their wrong approach costing them the win. 5th overall went to McAdoo/Keenan on 18 penalties total. Mac Kierans/Conor Boylan won the Semi-Expert class and claimed 6th overall on 22 penalties total. Kevin McCormack/David McCrudden won the Novice class and finished 8th overall on 36 penalties. Mark Deery/Patrick O’Leary and Mark Sheridan/Craig McPhillips completed the podium places.  Paddy Sherlock/Pamela McMahon won the Beginners class on an excellent 82 penalties holding off Colm & Mark Mohan who claimed 2nd place on 94 penalties. Aaron Dixon/Dylan Lennon secured a fine 3rd in class on 146 penalties.

COC Martin Connolly thanked all who helped in the running of the event particularly the land-owners and residents along the route.

He also thanked Tyholland Community Centre for the excellent venue and all the marshals who turned out to ensure all timepoints were manned.

Shane Maguire & Mac Kierans secured overall victory in the West Coast Rally Championship thanks to a 11th place finish on last weekend’s Kerry Mini Stages Rally. This is Shane’s 4th West Coast title win. Shane took a cautious approach to the event as a solid finish was all that he needed.
