  • Moffett/McKenna 2nd on Bushwhacker

    Clontibret’s Josh Moffett with Jason McKenna on the notes secured 2nd place overall on last weekend’s Bushwhacker Rally, which was a counting round of the Northern Ireland Rally Championship. The pair finished twenty seconds adrift of winners Mark Donnelly/Barry McNulty. Scotshouse man Andrew Grennan guided Adrian Hetherington to 10th overall and 2nd in class 7. Other local crews to feature included Michael Carbin/Darragh Kelly who finished 12th overall in their Lancer. Matthew McKenna guided Gerard McFall to 14th overall, while JP McAree finished 45th overall with driver, Derrick Jobb. Derek Mackarel/Muireann Hayes took 46th overall in their Nova. Emmet Sherry guided Amy Cox to 61st overall. However, the unfortunate Alan Smyth/Mac Kierans retired, which ended their hopes of success in the Road to Wales initiative. Alan Atchenson/Michaela McGinn also retired.

    Competitors Gear Up for New Navigation Season

     

    Regulations have been released for Monaghan Motor Club’s next event, the Club Navigation Trial on Saturday 3rd October. The event is a counting round of the Gary Nesbitt Club Navigation Championship and the Traders Trophy. COC for the night is Mac Kierans, assisted by Ruadhri Nash. A route of approximately 70 miles is on the cards with Agahbog the centre of the action on the night. Marshals are needed and volunteers are asked to attend at the Carne Resource Centre, Aghabog by 8pm.

    Monaghan Motor Club continues its series of Navigation Classes on this Friday 2nd October at 8pm in Sean McDermott’s GAA complex at Threemilehouse. These classes are open to all members of the public interested in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in this popular discipline of motorsport. A training package is provided to each participant for a nominal fee.

  • Puncture Costs McKenna in Clare

     

    Daniel McKenna & Galway co-driver, Kevin Glynn finished 4th overall on last weekend’s Clare Stages Rally. Daniel was again behind the wheel of the PH Rentals Ford Fiesta R5. The pair held a solid 2nd place over the first three stages just 12 seconds in arrears of Ed O’Callaghan. A stage four puncture cost them dearly as they lost over two and half minutes. They fought back with fastest overall times on the final two stages to recover to 4th overall. Shane Maguire & Mac Kierans brought their Lancer to 11th overall and 1st in Group N. This result secures Group N in the West Coast Championship for Shane. Paul Kelly was sitting with local man Paul Purtill. They took an early class 13 lead but fuel pressure problems cost them six minutes on stage 3. They eventually finished 52nd overall.

  • Mixed Luck for Monaghan Crews in Wexford

    A small contingent of Monaghan crews made the trip to the South-East last weekend for the 2 day Wexford Stages Rally. Justin Smyth/Gregory McQuillan had a difficult event in their Escort. They lost 4 minutes on the opening stage with fuel pressure problems. However, they charged back after that, setting some impressive stages times and climbed back to 2nd in class and 48th overall. Ballybay’s Stephen McElroy guided local man Frank Kinsella to 59th overall and 6th in class 10. Keith McConnon guided Brendan O’Reilly to 6th in class and 71st overall. Their hopes of a good result were dashed following an eight minute delay on stage six. Barry McKenna/Evin Hughes retired from the top 20 following a broken half shaft on stage six. Padraig Connolly/Padraig Corrigan retired on the opening stage with head gasket failure.

  • Moffets Dominate Lakelands

    The Moffett brothers Sam and Josh Moffett recorded another 1-2 finish on last weekend’s Lakelands Forestry Rally. The Enniskillen-based event was the fifth round of the Irish Forestry Rally Championship. Sam Moffett, who had James Fulton on the notes, took overall victory with Josh Moffett and Jason McKenna 21 seconds in arrears. Moffett/McKenna had taken the lead on stage two but Moffett/Fulton powered their WRC Fiesta into the lead on stage three and never looked back. In terms of the championship, Josh Moffett & Jason McKenna are firmly in the running once again for the title as championship leader Mick O’Brien finished 17th after a puncture.

    Michael Conlon & Ciaran McPhillips secured the 2wd championship with 15th overall and 2nd in class six. Michaela McGinn guided Damien McGauren to 26th overall with Mac Kierans and usual driver, Alan Smyth, 29th overall and 2nd in class. David Moffett/Andrew Spears headed into the wood and came home with 31st overall. Emmet Sherry brought Fergus Barlow to 41st overall. JP McAree navigated Derek Jobb to 48th overall. Matthew McKenna was sitting with Ashley Dickson and they finished 63rd overall. Michael Carbin/Darragh Kelly were as high as 5th overall in their Lancer but went off the road and got stuck on the final stage. David McNulty/Conor Foley also failed to make the finish.

These classes are open to all members of the public interested in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in this popular discipline of motorsport.   • Connolly Guides Hurson to 3rd Straight Win

    Scotstown’s Damien Connolly clinched a 3rd overall win in a row at last weekend’s Galway Summer Rally. The event was the penultimate round of both the Triton National Championship and Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship. Connolly guided Warrenpoint’s Peader Hurson to a dominate start to finish victory adding to their overall wins in Cavan and Cookstown so far this year. Elsewhere, Niall Maguire & Enda Sherry secured 2nd overall in the National Rally Championship after taking 2nd place overall on the day.

    Hurson/Connolly pulled out a massive 15 seconds lead over their rivals on the opening stage which they extended to over thirty seconds after the opening loop. Top seeds, Declan Boyle/Brian Boyle retired on the opening stage leaving Hurson/Connolly in complete control. Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry slotted into 2nd place just ahead of Welshman Steve Wood. Pacesetters Hurson/Connolly continued to pull away on the second loop increasing their lead to 51.8 seconds. Declan Gallagher/Ryan Moore slotted into a sensational 2nd place after going fastest overall on stage five with Maguire/Sherry in third 2.8 seconds behind. As Hurson/Connolly reeled off the final stages, Maguire/Sherry snatched back 2nd place from Gallagher.

    Daniel McKenna debuted a Ford Fiesta R5 with Galway navigator Kevin Glynn. Daniel gradually got the hang of his new mount and took a fine 8th overall and 1st in class 5. Emmet Sherry guided Barry Ryan to 13th overall and 3rd in class in their Honda-engined Escort. Barry Treanor/Jonathan Treanor had a great run to 27th overall and 1st in class 11R. Shane Maguire/Mac Kierans came home 29th overall and 3rd in class 4. Mark Tierney guided Brian Armstrong to 33rd overall and 2nd in class 12. Sean McCaul/Frank Clerkin took 58th overall and 7th in class 11R. Michael Carbin/Emmet McCooey were back in 73rd overall after a ten minute delay on stage three. Peter Farrell guided Martin McGuigan to 79th overall and 4th in class 10. Paul Crosby/James McEneaney took 4th in the Junior class with Martin Swinburne/Gretchen Fegan right behind in 5th place.

    Jim McKenna/Thomas Treanor, Seamus Connolly/Gary McCrudden, Declan Connolly/Alison Hughes and Paddy Quinn/Keith McConnon all failed to make the finish.

    The final round of the National Championship is the Skibbereen Fastnet Rally on 25th October while Donegal plays host to the final round of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship a fortnight earlier on 10th October.
